From preparing the substrate to placing the last tile, we make sure that you get started well prepared. Tiling in bathroom does not have to be complicated if you follow the right steps.

Preparation of tile work

1. Gathering the right materials

When tiling in bathroom, gathering the right materials is crucial. Make sure you have the following necessities ready.

Before you begin, it is important to have all required materials and tools ready for tiling. These include:

  • Tiles: Choose tiles that fit the style of your bathroom.
  • Leveling system: For a flat and professional result when tiling the bathroom.
  • Tile adhesive: Specially designed for wet areas such as bathrooms.
  • Grout: Water-resistant and matching your tile color for tiling the bathroom.
  • Tile cutter: For precise cutting of tiles during.
  • Notched trowel: For evenly applying tile adhesive during tiling the bathroom.
  • Cleaning sponge: To remove excess grout.
  • Rubber grout float: For smoothing joints.
  • Spirit level: To ensure that the tiles are straight.
  • Knee pad: Protects your knees while working on the floor.
  • Measuring tape and pencil: For accurate measuring and marking.
  • Bucket and mixing stick: For mixing adhesive and grout.
  • Silicone sealant and sealant gun: For waterproof sealing along edges and corners when tiling the bathroom.

1.2 Preparing the substrate

Preparing the substrate is a critical step in tiling the bathroom. Good preparation of the substrate ensures that the tiles adhere well and last long. Start by thoroughly cleaning the substrate, because a clean substrate is essential for successfully tiling a bathroom. Remove dust, dirt, and old adhesive residues, because these can disrupt the adhesion of the tiles. Tiling in bathroom begins with a clean, dry and level substrate. Also check for cracks or irregularities and repair these if necessary with a suitable repair mortar.

1.3 Making a plan

Determine the laying pattern of the tiles in advance. This can be, for example, a classic straight pattern or a herringbone pattern. Measure the space accurately and determine where you start tiling the bathroom. This helps to minimize waste of tiles and to plan any difficult corners properly. By making a plan in advance, you ensure that tiling the bathroom runs smoothly. A good plan is essential for successful tiling of the bathroom and for evenly tiling the bathroom.

2. Tiling in bathroom

2.1 Applying the tile adhesive

When tiling the bathroom, you start by applying the tile adhesive to a small section of the wall or floor, ideally an area that you can fully tile within 15 to 20 minutes. This is important because the adhesive needs a certain time to dry and lose its bonding strength. It is essential to distribute the adhesive evenly over the surface, and for that you use a notched trowel. A notched trowel has toothed edges that ensure the adhesive is applied in even ridges. These ridges create a uniform pattern that not only helps to fix the tiles firmly, but also to avoid any air bubbles under the tiles. The size of the teeth of the notched trowel must be adjusted to the size of the tiles; for smaller tiles you use a trowel with finer teeth, while larger tiles require a trowel with coarser teeth.

2.2 Placing tiles

When tiling in bathroom, placing the first tile is crucial, because this forms the basis for the rest of the tile work. Start in a corner or in a visible place, so that cut tiles can later be placed on less visible edges. Apply the tile adhesive evenly with a notched adhesive trowel on the chosen area. Then use the tile leveling system for a professional and even result when tiling the bathroom.

  1. Place the first tile carefully and use a spirit level to ensure that it lies completely level, since this forms the basis for the rest of your tile work.
  2. Then place the tile clips under the edges of this first tile to ensure equal distances between the tiles.
  3. Place the next tile on the bases of the clips, so that it connects exactly to the first tile.
  4. Press the tile firmly into the adhesive and check again with a spirit level whether it lies completely level. This ensures that the rest of the tiles can also be placed evenly and neatly.
  5. Then push a wedge into each clip and use the plier to tighten the wedges. This ensures that the tiles remain at the same height and prevents height differences, which contributes to a clean and professionally finished tile surface.
  6. When placing the next tiles, slide them close against the clips and use the wedges to bring the tiles to the same height. This prevents height differences and ensures a flat and professional result.
  7. After the adhesive has hardened, remove the clips and wedges easily by breaking them off in the direction of the joint, which results in a seamless and smooth finish.

2.3 Repeat the process

Repeat the process by working in small sections. Regularly check whether the tiles are level and cut them to size where necessary. Tiling the bathroom is a process of consistency and accuracy. Keep repeating the process until the entire bathroom is tiled.

3. Finishing the tile work

3.1 Applying grout

After all tiles have been placed, it is important to let the tile adhesive dry for at least 24 hours. This is crucial when tiling the bathroom to ensure that the tiles are firmly fixed. After the adhesive has dried, remove the leveling system and start applying grout. Use a rubber grout float to press the grout deep into the joints. Then clean the tiles with a slightly damp sponge to remove excess grout.

3.2 Finishing and cleaning

After the grout has dried, it is time to thoroughly clean the tiles with the sponge. Remove any remaining grout residues and check whether the joints are properly filled. Tiling the bathroom is only truly finished when the tiles are clean and the joints are neat. This final step is important to ensure that the tile work not only looks good, but is also resistant to wear and moisture.

3.3 Applying silicone sealant

The final step in tiling the bathroom is applying silicone sealant. This step ensures that the bathroom is completely waterproof. Apply the sealant evenly in the joints and corners and smooth it out for a neat finish. Tiling the bathroom is only complete when the sealing is perfect. Let the silicone sealant fully cure before using the bathroom. This ensures that your bathroom is protected against moisture and that the tile work lasts a long time.
