Choosing the right tile sponge

A good tile sponge is essential for cleaning and finishing tile work after grouting. With the right sponge, you can efficiently remove excess grout without washing out the joints or damaging the tile surface. This ensures a clean and even final result for both wall and floor tiles.

Not every sponge is suitable for tile work. Tile sponges are specifically designed to absorb and release water evenly, allowing grout residue to be removed without leaving streaks or haze.

Hydro sponge for initial cleaning

A hydro sponge is used for the first cleaning after grouting. It has an open-cell structure and a high absorption capacity, allowing it to quickly remove excess grout and water. Hydro sponges are ideal for larger surfaces and ensure efficient cleaning without damaging the joints.

Cellulose sponge for finishing and detailing

A cellulose sponge (often referred to as a standard sponge) is used for the final cleaning stage. A sponge float consists of a sponge mounted on a handle and is used to clean large surfaces evenly. Its flat shape and ergonomic grip allow for consistent pressure, ensuring uniform removal of grout residue. Sponge floats are often used in combination with a hydro sponge or cellulose sponge.

Practical tip when using tile sponges

Rinse your tile sponge regularly with clean water and wring it out well before use. Work in diagonal movements across the joints and avoid applying too much pressure. This helps maintain clean joints and a perfectly finished tile surface.
