Which tile wedges for your project?

Are you going to tile and do you want a perfectly level result without raised edges? Then wedges for tiles are a smart choice. But which tile wedges do you need? And how do you use them in combination with a leveling system?

In this blog, we explain what leveling wedges are, when you use them and which types best fit your tile project. Whether you are placing a wall, floor or large-format tile.

What are tile wedges?

Tile wedges, also called leveling wedges or tile shims, are wedge-shaped tools that you use in combination with leveling clips of a tile leveling system. They ensure that tiles lie tightly at the same height during the curing of the adhesive. This way you prevent height differences between adjacent tiles.

👉 Wedges are inserted into the clips and pressed by hand or with pliers until both tiles lie at exactly the same level.

Why use wedges when tiling?

When placing tiles on a floor or wall, it is essential that all tiles lie evenly. Even a millimeter difference is noticeable, especially with light incidence or large surfaces. Wedges for tiles ensure:

  • A perfectly level tile surface
  • No raised edges between tiles
  • A clean end result, even with large or thin tiles
  • Less correction work during grouting

Which leveling wedges do you need?

Wedges are often associated with leveling tiles, but did you know that there are different types of tile wedges? Whether you work with a leveling system or start a tile wall from the floor, the right wedge can make the difference between frustration and perfect tile work.

1. Leveling wedges for clip and wedge systems

Leveling wedges are used in combination with clips as part of a tile leveling system. These wedges are inserted into the clips that are placed between two tiles. You push or press them with pliers until both tiles are at exactly the same height.

Application:

  • Preventing height differences (lippage) between tiles
  • Ideal for large-format tiles or uneven substrates
  • Suitable for both floors and walls

2. Adjustment wedges for starting and aligning

The second category consists of small adjustment wedges (also called starter wedges or adjustment shims). These are not used to level tiles, but to:

  • Start your first row of tiles level against a wall or floor
  • Temporarily correct height differences
  • Temporarily fix or align tiles before applying adhesive

Types of adjustment wedges:

Which tile wedge do you choose?

Use this rule of thumb.

Are you working with clips and want to bring tiles to the same height? → Use leveling wedges (with clips + pliers)

Are you just starting with tiling and want a clean first row? Or are you working on an uneven substrate? → Use adjustment wedges (0–5 mm or 0–12 mm)

Do you combine both types for a perfect end result: level and neatly aligned.
