Why do tile levelling clips break too early? (and how to prevent it)

Professional tile installers know the frustration: a tile levelling clip breaks while tightening the wedge, or it doesn't snap cleanly at the break point after the adhesive has cured. More than just an inconvenience, this affects the performance of your tile levelling system and makes it harder to achieve a perfectly flat, professional finish.

The good news is that, in most cases, the problem isn't the levelling system itself. Premature or irregular breakage is usually caused by a combination of three factors: clip installation, the amount of tension applied and the quality of the clip. Once you understand these factors, most problems can be avoided.

 

Correct installation of the levelling clip

A levelling clip must be able to move freely during installation. If it becomes blocked or damaged, the chance of an irregular break increases significantly.

Excess adhesive around the clip

One of the most common causes is excess tile adhesive around the legs or break point of the clip. This restricts movement, preventing the clip from snapping cleanly where it was designed to break.

Damaged clips during installation

A clip that becomes bent or damaged while laying the tiles loses part of its strength. In many cases, this only becomes noticeable later when the clip unexpectedly breaks during installation.

 

Applying the right amount of tension

A tile levelling system is designed to eliminate small height differences between tiles. It is not intended to pull tiles together with maximum force.

Don't overtighten the wedge: The tighter the wedge is pushed into the clip, the greater the stress placed on the clip. Excessive tension significantly increases the risk of the clip breaking before the adhesive has cured.

Remove the clips at the right time: Timing also matters. If the adhesive is still too fresh, the levelling clip has not yet completed its job. If you wait too long after the adhesive has fully cured, the clip may not break away as cleanly. The quality of the levelling clip

Polypropylene absorbs installation stresses more effectively and is designed to break cleanly at the designated breaking point.

Choosing the correct clip is equally important. The clip should match both the tile thickness and the joint width. If not, the clip will be subjected to loads it wasn't designed to withstand.

 

Does the colour of the clip matter?

Not directly. The colour itself does not make a clip stronger or weaker. What matters is the composition of the plastic.

High-quality levelling clips are often produced from pure, unpigmented polypropylene, allowing the material to retain its mechanical properties and break predictably at the intended break point.

Some clips contain pigments, fillers or recycled plastics. While these materials aren't necessarily inferior, their composition can make the clip stiffer or more brittle. Combined with incorrect installation or excessive tension, this increases the risk of uneven breakage.

 

Check these points before you start

To minimise the risk of problems, always check that:

  • You're using the correct clip for the tile thickness and joint width.
  • Your levelling pliers are adjusted correctly.
  • There is no excess adhesive around the levelling clip.
  • The wedge is not tightened more than necessary.
  • The clips are removed at the correct curing time.
