Which tile spacers do you need for your project?
Want to maintain a clean and consistent grout width between your tiles? With tile spacers, you are guaranteed the desired result. In addition, these small tools offer many extra advantages when tiling. But which spacer is best for your tiling project, and what grout width is ideal for floor or wall tiles?
What is the purpose of tile spacers?
With tile spacers, you ensure that the grout width between all tiles is the same. You no longer have to measure the spacing yourself every time: spacers guarantee a consistent grout width throughout. In addition, they protect the tiles from damage, as they always remain neatly positioned at the correct distance from each other.

Types of tile spacers
Tile spacers are small tools that you place between tiles during installation. They ensure that all joints are equally wide and that the tiles are aligned neatly. Despite their simplicity, tile spacers have a major impact on the final result. They ensure an even laying pattern and prevent tiles from touching each other, which is important because tiles can expand due to temperature changes.
Using tile spacers prevents:
- Crooked grout lines
- Uneven spacing between tiles
- Stress and cracking caused by tiles placed too tightly
- Extra work afterwards to correct mistakes
Whether you are tiling a wall or a floor, tile spacers allow you to work faster, cleaner, and with more control.
X-shaped spacers
The most classic type is the X-shaped spacer. These spacers are placed at the intersections where four tiles meet and ensure that all joints remain even and straight. Because they are available in different sizes, usually from one to ten millimeters, you can easily choose the desired grout width. Small X spacers of one to two millimeters provide a clean and modern result, while wider versions of, for example, eight to ten millimeters are often used with rustic or natural stone tiles.

T-shaped spacers
For edges and corners where only three tiles meet, T-shaped spacers are the ideal solution, as they allow for clean joints without having to break spacers.
U-shaped or horseshoe spacers
For vertical applications, such as wall tiles, countertops, or window sills, U-shaped or horseshoe spacers offer the most convenience, especially when there are small height differences in the substrate.
Y-shaped spacers
For creative patterns or tiles laid in a diamond pattern, Y-shaped spacers are available, specifically designed for angled and non-standard configurations.
Multifunctional spacers
Multifunctional spacers, often called multicross spacers, offer much more flexibility than traditional spacers. Thanks to their smart design, they can be used as X-, T-, or I-shaped spacers depending on placement. This makes them ideal for various tiling patterns, from standard floors to edges and corners. With just one type of spacer, you always have the right solution at hand, which is not only convenient during installation but also saves time and material.

Self-leveling spacers
Finally, there are self-leveling spacers, often in the form of clips. These innovative spacers combine spacing and leveling in one system. They automatically correct small height differences and ensure a perfectly level result, which is especially advantageous when working with large-format tiles or less even substrates.

Whatever spacers you choose, they always guarantee a consistent grout width and a cleanly finished tile surface.
Grout width
When grouting, it is important to always maintain a minimum grout width of one to three millimeters. This gives tiles enough space to expand and keeps the installation durable and clean. The right spacers help you achieve this: they not only ensure a consistent grout width but also make the work faster and more precise. Range of tile spacers
Tile spacers are available in different versions. Nivello offers spacers in the form of leveling clips, multifunctional spacers, and standard tile spacers, which are convenient to use in combination with a leveling system. In the webshop, you can also choose from grout spacers and tile spacers. All spacers are produced sustainably and are therefore ideal for reuse.
