What factors determine the grout joint width between your tiles?

The right grout joint width not only determines the appearance of your tiled surface but also its durability. It helps compensate for minor dimensional variations, reduces stress within the tiled surface and ensures that the grout can be applied correctly.

The ideal grout joint width depends on several factors, including the type of tile, the application and the substrate. In this article, you'll discover the most important guidelines.


Why is the correct grout joint width important?

Many people choose a grout joint width based solely on appearance. A narrow joint creates a sleek, modern look, while a wider joint gives a more traditional finish. In reality, grout joints serve several important technical purposes.

A properly sized grout joint:

  • accommodates expansion and contraction of the tiles and substrate;
  • reduces stress within the tiled surface;
  • compensates for minor dimensional variations between tiles;
  • allows grout to penetrate to the proper depth;
  • reduces the risk of cracks and loose tiles.

A grout joint that is too narrow can prevent the grout from bonding properly and may transfer stresses directly to the tiles. A joint that is too wide is usually less problematic from a technical standpoint but will affect the overall appearance of the floor or wall.


What factors determine the correct grout joint width?

There is no single grout joint width that is suitable for every project. Several factors should be considered when choosing the right joint width.

1. Edge finish and dimensional accuracy

The difference between rectified and non-rectified tiles is often the deciding factor.

Rectified tiles are precisely cut after firing, making them highly dimensionally accurate. As a result, grout joints as narrow as 1.5 mm for wall tiles and 2 mm for floor tiles can generally be used.

Non-rectified tiles have slight dimensional variations. To compensate for these differences, a minimum grout joint of 2 mm for wall tiles and 3 mm for floor tiles is recommended.

2. Indoor or outdoor tiles

The installation environment has a major influence on the required grout joint width.

Indoor tiles are exposed to relatively small temperature fluctuations and movement, allowing narrower grout joints in most cases.

Outdoor tiles are exposed to sun, rain, frost and significant temperature changes. Because of this expansion and contraction, a minimum grout joint width of 3 mm is generally recommended for outdoor installations.

3. Wall or floor tiles

Whether the tiles are installed on a wall or a floor also affects the recommended grout joint width.

Wall tiles are subjected to very little load and are often smaller and lighter. Depending on their dimensional accuracy, a minimum grout joint of 1.5 to 2 mm is generally sufficient.

Floor tiles must support foot traffic, furniture and slight movement in the substrate. Therefore, a minimum grout joint of 2 to 3 mm is usually recommended.

 

4. Underfloor heating

With underfloor heating, the tile assembly continuously expands and contracts as it heats up and cools down.

A sufficiently wide grout joint helps absorb these thermal movements and reduces the risk of cracks or loose tiles. For this reason, a minimum grout joint width of 3 mm is generally recommended. Depending on the tile size, tile type and the manufacturer's instructions, a wider grout joint may be required.

5. Manufacturer's technical guidelines

General recommendations provide a good starting point, but the tile manufacturer may specify a different minimum grout joint width. This depends on factors such as the tile's dimensional accuracy, size, edge finish and intended application.

Always consult the tile's technical data sheet before installation to ensure that your chosen grout joint width complies with the manufacturer's recommendations.
