What is the best tile leveling system?

When tiling floors or walls, there is one thing you definitely want to avoid: lippage (height differences between adjacent tiles). An uneven tiled surface not only looks unprofessional but can also lead to premature wear and even create a tripping hazard. That's why using a tile levelling system has become essential. But which one is the best for your project?

In this guide, we compare the different tile levelling systems from LEVELIT, HELIX, XL, XXL, Prospacer and Tiling Buddy, helping you choose the best solution for your tiling project.

A tile levelling system with wedges or caps?

At Nivello, we offer two types of tile levelling systems: a clip-and-wedge system and a clip-and-cap system. Both ensure perfectly level tiles and help prevent lippage.

The main difference lies in how they are tightened. A wedge system uses a levelling plier to pull the wedge into the clip, while a cap system uses a reusable screw-on cap that is tightened by hand. The best choice depends on your personal preference, the type of tile and the application.

What should you consider when choosing a tile levelling system?

The best tile levelling system depends on your specific project. When making your choice, consider the following four factors:

  • Grout joint width
  • Tile thickness
  • Tile size
  • Project size

Not every tile levelling system is suitable for every tile. Clips are available in different joint widths and support specific tile thicknesses, so it's important to choose a system that matches your application.

The best tile levelling systems

At Nivello, we offer six different tile levelling systems. Below, you'll find the key features of each system to help you determine which one best suits your project.

LEVELIT Tile levelling system

The LEVELIT tile levelling system is a reliable solution used daily by professional tilers. The clips are suitable for tiles 3–12 mm thick and are available in 1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 mm grout joint widths, allowing you to select the ideal clip for every installation. For thin tiles between 3 and 6 mm, a wedge spacer ensures the wedge is positioned correctly in the clip. Thanks to its high clamping force, the LEVELIT system is ideal for large-format tiles, extensive floor areas and demanding projects.

HELIX Tile levelling system

The HELIX tile levelling system features an innovative twist-cap mechanism that levels tiles without the need for levelling pliers. The reusable caps simply screw onto the clips, making installation quick, easy and efficient. The clips are available in 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 mm grout joint widths and are suitable for tiles 3–17 mm thick. Thanks to its tool-free operation, HELIX is ideal for wall tiles as well as small, medium and large-format tiles.

XL Tile levelling system

The XL tile levelling system is specially designed for thick and heavy tiles, such as outdoor porcelain pavers and natural stone. The extra-high clips are suitable for tiles 15–25 mm thick and are available in 2 and 4 mm grout joint widths. Their extended height and high clamping force make it easy to install heavy outdoor tiles without lippage. The XL system is therefore the ideal choice for terraces, patios and other outdoor applications where standard clips are too short.
