Preparing tile adhesive yourself in 5 steps

Are you going to tile? Then everything starts with a good foundation: the right tile adhesive. In many cases, you work with cement-based powder adhesive, which you have to prepare yourself. That seems simple, but it often goes wrong: lumps, adhesive that is too thin or too little working time. A pity, because this has a direct impact on the adhesion of your tile work.

In this article, we explain step by step how you prepare tile adhesive, which ratios you should follow, and what you must absolutely avoid.

What do you need to prepare tile adhesive?

For preparing cement-based powder adhesive you need the following:

  • Cement-based powder adhesive (e.g. flexible adhesive)
  • Water
  • Bucket of at least 20 liters
  • OR an electric drill with a mixing rod (adhesive mixer)
  • OR an electric mixer
  • Measuring cup or bucket with scale division
  • Trowel

👉 Tip: Always use clean tools. Old adhesive residues or contaminated water can disrupt the performance of the new mix.

Step by step: this is how you prepare tile adhesive

1. Determine the correct amount

Always read the packaging of the tile adhesive first. The manufacturer indicates exactly how much water you need per kilogram of adhesive (often ± 0.25 liter per kilo). Calculate in advance how much you need for your tile surface.

2. Start with water in the bucket

Always pour the water into the mixing bucket first. This prevents the powder from sticking to the bottom or forming lumps.

👉 Tip: Use the correct amount of water. Follow the ratio of the manufacturer. Too wet = weak adhesion, too dry = not workable.

3. Add the powder adhesive

Sprinkle the powder slowly into the water while stirring with the mixer. Use a drill with a mixing rod or adhesive mixer at low speed (max. 600 rpm) to mix the adhesive calmly and evenly.

👉 Tip: Do not pour all the powder into the bucket at once. Sprinkle the powder slowly into the bucket to prevent lumps. Use the mixer immediately.

4. Mix until a smooth mass

Keep mixing until you have a lump-free, thick and creamy substance. The adhesive must be firm enough not to drip, but smooth enough to spread well with a notched trowel.

👉 Tip: Mixing too hard or too fast. Too high speed (more than 600 rpm) creates air bubbles, which leads to hollow spots under the tile.

5. Let the adhesive rest for a moment

Let the adhesive rest for 3 to 5 minutes (also called “maturing”). This allows the binding agents to fully activate. Then mix briefly once more for an optimal consistency.

👉 Tip: Observe the resting time. When you use the tile adhesive immediately, the effect of the binding agents is not optimal. Result: weak adhesion.

How long can I use prepared tile adhesive?

On average, prepared tile adhesive remains workable for 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature. Therefore work in batches, and never prepare more than you can process within half an hour.

👉 Do not do: Do not add extra water when the adhesive starts to thicken. This disrupts the chemical composition. Throw the adhesive away and prepare a new batch.
