Choosing tile sponges: which one is right for your tiling project?

Not every sponge is suitable for tiling work, and the final result will show it immediately. Streaks, smeared grout joints or colour differences are rarely a coincidence. In practice, it almost always comes down to one mistake: using the wrong sponge.
The right tile sponge ensures a clean finish, reduces the risk of washing out grout joints and gives you far more control during cleaning. Especially on larger surfaces, with epoxy grout or high-end finishes, your sponge choice directly affects how professional the final result looks.
Why a good tile sponge makes a difference
With the right sponge, you work faster, cleaner and with more control. Poor-quality sponges often leave smears, increase the risk of surface damage and wear out quickly due to the abrasive nature of cement grout. Using too much water or the wrong sponge structure can also make grout joints porous or even partially wash them out.
Durability also plays an important role. Cheaper sponges wear out faster and often react poorly to epoxy resin. The result is simple: more dirt, more frustration and ultimately a less professional finish.
Which tile sponges are used in practice?
1. Hydro sponge
The hydro sponge is the standard choice for cement-based grout work. Its fine structure absorbs grout residue effectively without damaging the joints. For standard tiling work, this is often sufficient, although you will notice its limitations on more detailed or precision-oriented projects.

2. Cellulose sponge
For greater control, many professionals choose a cellulose sponge. Its high absorption capacity allows you to work drier and more consistently, making it particularly suitable for epoxy grout, but also ideal for achieving a cleaner finish with cement-based grout.
Important: never wring out a cellulose sponge by twisting it. The twisting motion breaks down the wood fibres inside the sponge structure, causing it to tear or fall apart quickly. Instead, squeeze the sponge out evenly using flat pressure without twisting.
3. Sponge float
Once you start working on larger surfaces, a loose hand sponge is no longer efficient enough. You lose speed, work less evenly and have less control over water usage. At that point, switching to a sponge float becomes essential.
Combined with a washboy set, a sponge float significantly improves efficiency. You rinse the float on the grid and squeeze it through the rollers, ensuring the sponge always has the correct moisture level. This is critical: cleaning too wet weakens the grout joints, while working too dry leaves residue behind.
The amount of water in the bucket also matters more than most people think. Fill the washboy only slightly around 1 cm above the grid is sufficient. More water only makes the system heavier and reduces control during cleaning.
The sponge float itself provides a stable grip and allows you to clean faster and more consistently. On larger projects, the difference in both speed and finish quality becomes immediately noticeable.
4. Double-sided sponge
A double-sided sponge combines a soft cleaning side with a lightly abrasive side. The soft side is used for removing grout residue, while the abrasive side helps loosen stubborn haze and build-up.
This makes the sponge practical, but certainly not a universal solution. The abrasive side is more aggressive than many tilers expect and can scratch surfaces or damage grout joints if used incorrectly. Control and timing are therefore essential.
The red abrasive side is mainly used to loosen residue on the tile surface before the actual cleaning process. Afterwards, the surface is wiped down with the soft side or another suitable sponge.
These sponges are available in both synthetic and cellulose versions, with cellulose being more suitable for epoxy applications. On larger surfaces with many grout joints, an epoxy float is often more efficient than a hand sponge, even for cement-based grout.

5. Epoxy sponge or epoxy sponge float
When working with epoxy grout, specialised tools are not optional they are essential. Epoxy has a completely different structure from cement grout and quickly saturates standard sponges. The result is dragging, smearing and poorly cleaned surfaces.
An epoxy sponge and epoxy sponge float are specifically designed to handle this resin-based structure. They absorb less material, remain usable for longer and allow controlled cleaning without disturbing the grout joints.
Technique is equally important. You first use the epoxy sponge float to loosen and emulsify the grout residue. Only afterwards do you use a suitable sponge to remove the remaining material effectively.
If you use a standard synthetic sponge here, it will quickly deteriorate or even dissolve under the influence of epoxy resin, resulting in a visibly poorer finish.
Practical tips
1. Clean the tile surface with a hydro sponge float
Use a well-wrung hydro sponge float and clean the tile surface with slow diagonal movements across the grout joints. This prevents fresh grout from being pulled out of the joints. Avoid using excessive water, as too much moisture can weaken or wash out the grout.
2. Rinse the sponge regularly
Always work with clean water during cleaning. A dirty sponge spreads cement residue back over the tiles, causing streaks and cement haze.
3. Finish with a hydro sponge
If light haze or residue remains after using the sponge float, wipe the surface again with a slightly damp hydro sponge for a cleaner and more even finish.
4. Dry with a clean cloth
Finish the tiles with a clean, dry cloth. This removes the final traces of moisture and helps prevent streaks or dull haze on the surface.
Choosing the right tile sponge
The right tile sponge depends on the grout type, the size of the project and the desired finish. For standard tiling work, a quality grout sponge is often sufficient, while cellulose and epoxy sponges perform better in specialist applications.
Professionals therefore do not simply choose any sponge, they choose the right sponge for the specific job.
